No compulsory redundancies – strike ballot opens!
On Friday 30th May our strike ballot formally began as ballot papers began to be posted, some members have already reported receiving, completing and posting ballots on Saturday as soon as they arrived!
To gain a mandate for strike action and action short of a strike – and so strengthen our collective hand in discussions with management to prevent compulsory redundancies in 2025 and 2026 – at least 50% of members are required to vote.
Workers at Cardiff and Dundee Universities have already forced their management to cancel compulsory redundancies by winning their respective industrial action ballots. Winning our own ballot would give us leverage to convince management that there is a better way forward.
Once your ballot is complete and in the post please let the branch know, by informing your Departmental Rep.

Workload Campaign ‘Just say NO!’
UCU national has organised a Saying No with Confidence webinar tomorrow, Wednesday 4th June at 4:00-5:00 pm which has been developed to support us in taking a collective approach to pushing back on workloads. We will look at workplace culture and how we can change workplace practices by using Health & Safety Legislation to empower members to take a stand and say ‘NO!’, whilst maintaining professional standards.
The full aims of the interactive workshop are to:
Identify assertiveness techniques and strategies for saying “no” at work,
Learn to use Health and Safety legislation to push back to protect us against workplace stress and health risks due to excessive workloads,
Understand the role of collective action in changing workplace culture through union campaigning.
60 Years of the Tricontinental Conference: Context, Impact, Legacy, and Future Parvathi Kumaraswami, an academic at the University is crowdfunding for travel grants for scholars, artists and activists from the Global South to attend the above January 2026 conference at the University of Havana. This will celebrate the original event and prioritize contributions from the Global South and stimulate important debates about the original event and its relevance to anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and decolonisation.
Call on Nottinghamshire County Council to divest from apartheid Nottingham Palestine Solidarity Campaign is leading a movement to demand Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) divests its Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) from companies and organisations complicit in the genocide in Palestine. Currently the LGPS holds £170 million in shares in genocide-complicit companies. In line with the branch’s BDS motion and solidarity with Palestine motion the branch has given official support to the campaign.
We encourage all members resident in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County to sign the petition here.
Notts Trans Pride The second ever Notts Trans Pride will take place on Saturday 21st June, with the march starting from Broadway Cinema. With the current political climate, it is essential that we have maximum visible Trade Union support for trans rights so please save the date. In addition, if you are interested in helping to contribute to the running of the event please sign up here.

A very well attended and active members meeting was held yesterday afternoon, Monday 2nd June. Many thanks to everyone who made the time to attend. The meeting discussed Branch Committee updates and members questions, comments and views on:
Phase 1 of Future Nottingham
The release last week of flawed and incomplete ‘pooling’ information for APM colleagues, and Branch Committee participation in consultations to date with updates from Lopa Leach as President, Nick Clare as Secretary, and Andrew Armstrong as APM Officer were discussed.
The Branch Committee was categorical that the large size of some pools was not at the request of trade unions, despite statements suggesting or stating otherwise in university communications.
The widespread and well-founded frustration of members was evident throughout the meeting, with members highlighting the need to translate frustration into solidarity across job families within the Union and across the University as a whole.
Apparent inconsistencies and poor communications from the University were highlighted, including the failure to publish FAQs with ‘pooling’ information last week, the seemingly changing and ambiguous position of School-based APM staff between phases 1 and 2, that concerns about UniCore data used to inform this process have been raised repeatedly, and the inclusion of externally funded roles in the ‘pools’.
The ballot for strike action and action short of a strike
Andreas, as Vice President, underlined that as this is a local dispute we are in a position to decide our own strategy and develop tactics tailored to how our workplace functions that are as hard-hitting as possible, thus heightening our chances of success.
The importance of a strong ballot turnout and the key role of ASOS were emphasised by several speakers and in the chat discussion.
Recent wins at Sheffield, Dundee and Cardiff were noted as examples where high ballot turnouts and commitment to taking action protected jobs.
That our goal in balloting for – and potentially taking – strike action is to prevent compulsory redundancies was underlined. The need to challenge the University to adopt a more sustainable financial model in the longer term, as articulated in the Alternate Financial Strategy 2.0, was also underscored.
Next steps and actions
The key next step for all members is to vote then let your department rep know when you have posted your ballot!
Any member who wishes to join the ‘get out the vote’ work, especially in an area without a UCU representative, is invited to email the branch: uonucubranch@gmail.com.
The meeting also heard a call from Tony Padilla as Treasurer for proposals of fundraising activities to support the branch solidarity and hardship fund. As with prior disputes, the fund will be used to support members in the event of industrial action. If you have a proposal for fundraising activities, please contact the branch.
If you wish to make a one-off or recurring donation to the fund, please use the details here.
I hope you were able to have some much needed time off over the bank holiday? We are just writing with some key updates to events happening both here and nationally, so apologies for the amount of information but we have tried to keep it as clear as we can!
Member’s meeting – Monday 2nd June, 1-2pm
We have called this meeting to provide you all with more updates on our dispute with the University. After the excellent response to the indicative ballot, UCU has now formally sent our ballot information to the VC Jane Norman and the full ballot will open for a month from the 30th of May. As ever it is crucial we have a strong turnout in this ballot, in order to respond to both Phase 1 and Phase 2, and so you will be hearing from our wonderful reps as they help get the vote out.
This meeting is a chance to hear from the committee about all the meetings we have been having with management, ask questions about the dispute and ballot, and provide feedback on potential industrial action plans as we move into summer, next academic year, and even Phase 2. The meeting link can be found below:
UCU UoN is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
Lopa, Andreas, and Andrew recently sent you a detailed update on Phase 1 of Future Nottingham. Since then the deadline for VR applications has been extended to the 9th of June and we have continued to meet with University management and have submitted and discussed a range of questions and queries about the process. These questions reflect the fact that we have still not received proper and meaningful information about Phase 1 and therefore we still dispute that we are in a proper period of collective consultation which would enable us to give counter-proposals.
As you can see from the many comments on the staff sharepoint, there is a strong response from staff that communication from the University has been unclear and confusing, and that the way pooling and redundancies have been handled has been rushed. This has been disastrous for staff wellbeing, and is why it is so important we have a strong turnout in the upcoming ballot.
You received emails from our APM officer Andrew Armstrong on Friday 23rd about area-specific member meetings for APM staff so please do come along to these, and we will be continuing to roll out faculty-wide, all staff meetings over the coming weeks to help provide all UoN staff with as much clarity as we possibly can. We are also working with our sister unions so that all staff can push back together.
Phase 2 information
While officially we are being told that Phase 2 is yet to start, as we flagged with the situation in American and Canadian Studies, academic restructuring decisions are already being taken without proper stakeholder consultation. An increased focus on ‘performance management’ through unprecedented use of protected conversations and potential changes to the ADC process is also underway.
As soon as we have any more concrete information on Phase 2 we will of course share it with you, especially as we know that Faculty level discussions have begun.
National picture updates
Finally, just some wider information on the national picture following the UCU congress at the weekend. Our fantastic delegates (Lisa, Gertjan, and Alan) will provide a fuller report in time, but the key thing to note is that the ‘Trade Dispute’ motion that we overwhelmingly supported as a branch was passed at congress. This Times Higher article gives a bit more detail on what this could mean, but we feel this is a positive step for exploring other avenues at a national level – something crucial given the derisory 1.4% pay offer from UCEA.
We hope you had some time to rest over this bank holiday weekend. Don’t forget to check out the “Local and national campaigning” section of this newsletter for campaigns which intersect with the aims and goals of our union and branch.

Save Language Centre casuals and language learning in Nottingham!
Casualised Language Centre staff at UoN have been demanding the basic dignity of direct employment, including through a recent letter to management signed by over one hundred staff members. However, management has ignored this request (contradicting their own Principles for Casual Engagement) and instead announced plans tolet go all Language Centre casual workers, and end all their teaching. This is an incredibly damaging decision; it hurts the University (the Language Centre generates a surplus!), it hurts staff, it hurts students, and it hurts the wider Nottingham community, for whom there remain very few language learning opportunities.
Please sign this new open letter to demand the University reverse its decision! This letter will form part of a broader, community oriented campaign.
Open faculty level meetings
On Tuesday 20th May, representatives from UCU as well as sister campus unions UNISON and Unite held an open meeting for the faculty of Science to discuss Future Nottingham from a Trade Union perspective. Between online and in-person attendees there were over 200 staff members present for a rather lively discussion.
Following this success, we will be holding further similar meetings for other faculties as well as for APM staff. Please look out for information about these meetings in coming weeks.
Workplace safety
Safety is everyone’s right and everyone’s responsibility. If you have reported safety issues in your building or area that have not thereafter been dealt with by management, then please report them to your branch. The best way to do this is to email our Health and Safety Officer, Cyril Rauch (REDACTED) and copy in your Departmental Rep.
Wins for the Workload Campaign
We wanted to let you know of some of our successes this year so far;
We’re changing the narrative around acceptable workloads with our ‘95 so we can thrive campaign’. Health Sciences has now adopted a 100% maximum workload model and is piloting new workload plans.
We’ve established a Workload/Work-Related Stress Task and Finish Group via JNCC channels, which Alex Lancaster (National UCU Workload Health and Safety Officer) will be joining.
We’ve challenged the institution-wide lack of Business Unit Stress Risk Assessments.
The University has now developed an (albeit flawed and incomplete) Organisational Stress Risk Assessment, which we are now working to improve.
There’s still lots to do, and as such we’re planning a workload campaign strategy development morning soon. Please email any suggestions for this planning meeting to REDACTED. In particular, we will be focusing on:
Supporting members with their right to confidently push back on the inevitable increase in workload due to redundancies via our ‘Just Say No!’ campaign
Embedding the 100% maximum workload commitment across all schools
Ensuring the university meets its legal requirements in terms of stress prevention
UCU Congress 2025: Highlights
UoN UCU delegates attended Congress and the HE Sector Congress over the bank holiday weekend. A full report will follow; all motions referred to can be found here.
Congress took many important decisions to support members in time of cuts and redundancies as well as all those facing marginalisation. A novel strategy to take the fight over HE funding (motion HE14 – which our AGM endorsed) to the government was passed. Another motion (35 Rule Change Motion – Recall of Congress and/or Sector Conferences) our branch supported did not attain the two-thirds majority required.
Our amendment (24A.1) to request a fulsome review of the model branch rules passed. The other motions (31 & 37) we submitted fell off the agenda due to a lack of time.
