UoN UCU has made progress in addressing the issue of casualisation and the working conditions of hourly-paid staff. Below are the joint statement by UCU and UoN, a declaration of principles, and the description of the joint working-group that will review the implementation of the principles.
Management recognises that the way hourly paid teachers are employed at the moment is problematic and needs improvement
Both UCU and management agree that hourly paid teachers, including PGR teachers, have to be paid for all the work carried out. While teaching experience is important for PGR students, this must not mean that they work for free.
Acceptance that more improvements are necessary and possible.
