The Agency Worker Regulations (AWR), which came into effect on 1st October 2011, entitle agency workers to benefit from many of the same basic employment terms and conditions as employees who work directly for the University. The University publishes guidance on this for managers.
The University expects that a long term requirement should not be filled through an agency, since the expectation is that agency workers should be used only for short term requirements.
You may well have seen that we’ve been working with Unison and Unite on campus on a joint campaign on both precarious employment and the Living Wage. The Unite branch here are asking agency workers to share their experiences of casual employment at the University. UoN UCU will shortly be surveying casual teachers, some of whom may be employed through an agency.
